Positive Affirmations For Self-change

By Almond Rae

What really sets Pherform apart is that we really try and challenge the self-narrative we use during difficult workouts as well as on a day-to-day basis.

We'll always hear Stephanie's "Why are you here?" whenever you're in an IGNITHER class or Kin's "Go heavier. You're strong enough." or even Bernie's "You've got this ladies!" because we believe it's important to be constantly reminded of the purpose and the good of what comes from what you choose to do on a daily basis.

We know not everyday is a great training day or a good work day. When workouts or even days get hard, it's so easy for us to focus on all the things that make it difficult or go wrong, and we then we create this negative-self talk which affects our self-perception, which then affects our identity long-term.

When we feel good about ourselves and have a positive attitude, our lives tend to run smoothly. A lot of issues are minor issues and are easily solved. And when we feel bad about ourselves and have a negative attitude, we tend to engage in self-defeating behaviours which may cause negative outcomes.

At Pherform, we aim to help reprogramme our self-talk, to encourage a higher belief in ourselves and with that to help create the reality that we want; which is ultimately a balanced lifestyle in our training, family, social, and self.

Self-affirmations buffer stress and help improve troubleshooting problems as it forces you to think of the steps on how to get to where you want to be, both in the short term and long run. They are there to help create self-change and serve as inspiration and they are there to be your WHY.

So what are some positive affirmations we can use for ourselves in and outside the gym?

  1. Instead of saying "I have" to go to the gym, say "I get" to go to the gym. You go to the gym because it brings you joy not because it's an obligation.

  2. Instead of "I don't like how many burpees there are", say "These burpees will be a really good challenge for me".

  3. Instead of "I workout because I hate the way I look", say "I work out because I care about my body".

  4. Instead of saying "I can't lift this" or "I can't do that", give it a try and see where you're at. After all, we're there to improve, right?

  5. Instead of "everything is going wrong", say "how I can make this easier for myself?" or "How can I fix this?"

Positive affirmations come in many different shapes and forms, but what's important is self-belief and self-admiration. It's very closely linked to our WHY, and is what keeps pushing us forward. All our inner dialogue and self-talk is an affirmation of some kind, that if repeated continually will become a part of our life experiences and beliefs.

Not only is it important how we talk to ourselves, but it's also important that we surround our social circles with people who want the best for us and who encourage us. This is why Pherform is completely dedicated to providing a safe space for women to build their confidence and build their self talk, for in and outside the gym.

We know it's a learning curve and takes a lot of practice, so if you’re looking for a bit of extra help consider joining our 8 Week On Ramp Program, with advisor check-ins, group Whatsapp for encouraging one another and one-on-one time in your PT sessions you’ll have all the extra support you need to make positive affirmations part of your daily rhythm.
